caveman’s grocery list

Previously on this blog, I wrote about the paleo diet. It can be a tough transition from today’s modern, processed American standbys. The paleo, or caveman diet, calls for eating meals that contain meat, fruit, vegetables and seeds. It does not include grains, dairy, beans (peanuts, black beans, etc) or processed foods. An easy way to grasp his – you’re stranded on an island. What will you survive off of?

Switching over to a paleo diet can be a challenge, but the cravings quickly go away, and the benefits quickly become parent.

Eating like a caveman is easier than you may think.

So, what are some good staples to pick up to stockpile a paleo kitchen? It’s easier than you think, and as you’ll read, fairly versatile.  And if you can, go organic or locally grown. The combinations and recipes you can make with these are endless:

Meats:

  • Salmon
  • Chicken
  • Bison
  • Shrimp
  • Lamb
  • Bacon
  • Turkey
  • Pork

Fruits:

  • Berries
  • Melons
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Bananas
  • Kiwi
  • Grapes

Vegetables:

  • Leafy greens (spinach, kale0
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Peppers
  • Asparagus
  • Onions
  • Sweet potatoes/yam (but NOT white potatoes)

Seeds/Nuts (raw, unsalted):

  • Almonds
  • Pecans
  • Pumpkin
  • Sunflower
  • NO peanuts

Staples:

  • Spices
  • Organic mayo
  • Vinegars

Now let’s get shopping and creative in the kitchen. Your body will thank you.
